You can run multiple storage nodes but preferably, you should make sure each will be run in a different physical location and IP. Please note that running multiple nodes is currently not officially supported for Windows GUI installations, though you may find some community made solutions are available on our forum. Please use the Docker CLI setup in order to run multiple nodes.
Each node should use its own signed identity. You need to have an authorization token to sign your identity. To receive the authorization token, you should fill out the sign-up form. Be sure to use Chrome or Edge browser with any ad-blockers disabled. Each node in the same location must use an own external port: Single and multi-node Port forwarding setup.
If you want to run multiple nodes in the same location, you have a few options:
1) use the OS functions to make a RAID array from your disks. Please note that we do not recommend this option, especially the use of RAID without parity. Without parity, a single disk failure would result in the loss of the entire node with all its raided disks. On the other hand, using RAID with parity, you will waste part of the array for the parity configuration.
2) start more nodes, each with its own identity. But this also comes with some downsides.
So, considering the disadvantages of options 1) and 2), it would be best to wait until the first node is almost entirely filled up, and only then add another new node. This will have the advantage that in this case the vetting process will not take an extended time, as it would if you tried to start multiple nodes at the same time on the same IP/location.
Please, note - running more nodes or adding more space doesn't help you to get more data or traffic. How fast you will be able to fill up your shared space highly depends on the customers' actions related to their needs for up- and downloading their files.
Since in a single location, all your nodes would be behind the same IP, they will receive the same or less amount of data as they would if you were running only one single node. This is because of IP filtering - we want to create a network that is as decentralized as possible.
It is also important to remember that it is not cost effective to buy any hardware with the sole purpose of using it only for Storj. ROI can take years or you may never recover the entire amount invested at all. This is because running a storage node on the Storj network is not like mining cryptocurrencies - space and bandwidth are used by real people, not computers. So there will not be a predictable stream of income, and your setup will only be profitable if your hardware would be running and online anyway regardless of your participating in the Storj Network.
